Riddle me this.
Oct. 11th, 2009 11:32 pmThis is about Dollhouse, which I'm still watching, despite not really caring for the main character. I figure since I love the premise (evil corporation with the power to program people for assignments) and the characters (the list is long, but my favourite trio has to be Victor, Sierra and Adelle deWitt, with Dr Saunders a close second (fourth?).
( spoilers for Belle Chose )
Echo's special status is starting to bug me. And I mean really bug me. Suppose for a second that a corporation had the technology to erase brains and imprint totally new personalities on them. Sounds like a splendid business, for those rich enough. But of course human brain is the opposite of simple. It has layers and mechanisms that may prove to be too complex to fully unravel. This alone makes the business a massive risk. For the sake of argument, the risk is worth it. Whether for science, or money. Given precautions, it could work. The trouble of course is that theoretically every human being is theoretically capable of taking the life of another. Some need extreme stimuli, some don't. Some, presumably, would, had a minor childhood memory not interfered.
With all that, it stands to reason each and every doll would be monitored closely, for signs the imprint is not going exactly as planned, or even that the doll in its blank state isn't developing a consciousness. Because, well, a conscious mind, saddled with foreign, conflicting impulses, could go insane. Especially if the original personality, the one the brain has grown into, has been shown to act in a certain manner. It seems logical that should the doll display symptoms of fighting the erases and imprints, he or she should be promptly restored to the original personality, for probation, and should that prove unsuccessful, erased permanently. When you program people a little murder cannot hurt, would certainly pose less of a risk to the general population than allowing a faulty doll to run around pretty much unattended.
Say, this doesn't sound at all familiar, does it?
The riddle is thus: how the fuck do they expect us to believe Echo, who is showing obvious signs of turning out to be another Alpha, is running around with the guy who is itching to take her to the authorities and testify, when Alpha very nearly destroyed everything less than what, four months previously?
