Hussein was executed today, in order, as I suspect, to promote peace, justice and law. I must admit death penalty is not exactly something I have clear and defined feelings about. Some criminals made me wish for their deaths, yeah, but on the whole I would sign a petition prohibiting it (not that the EU didn't do it for me already). Death is too permanent to be considered lightly, ever. Now life sentence is a wholly different thing - some individuals should not be allowed out.

Back to Hussein though. Since I didn't follow the trial, I can't honestly say that I think he deserved it. I don't know enough. Yeah, he probably made many lives a living hell, knowingly or not. Catholic church made many lives a living hell, and I don't see anyone sending their troops to Vatican¹. But the fact is, this whole war was to prove how much more civilised "we" are, compared to "them". Hanging makes a sorry period at the end of that sentence.

¹ Excluding Switzerland, but they always liked to be different.

I realise that what the war was really about is oil fields and whose hands are on them. But this is what they told us, so they should at least try to keep up with the smokescreen.

Totally agree with you. I am glad that the european countries are against death panalty. I don`t think that it will get any better even though he is dead now. I don`t know enough about it either, so maybe i am wrong, but it just seemed like it from the news we get.

In this situation, I think killing him is the worst thing they could do. They made a martyr out of him and, considering the war is propelled forward by religious fanatics, that is never a good thing.

I'd love to agree, but i wish they had the death penalty over here for some things and since he terrorised his country i think it only right they had the ultimate choice. Maybe he was just too dangerous to keep locked up. Now he's been made a maytar which isn't great but choice out of our hands, but at least he's also gone and theres no chance of him being broken out and callous as it sound sponging off peoples money and having a decent life.

That's why I had mixed feelings about the death penalty. On one hand, some people plainly do not deserve the air they breathe, but on the other, I can't see anything good coming out of his death.

That's another thing - prisons are way too comfy, I think. Prinsoners should work for their keep. The rest of us have to, after all.
